Most of Deerfield's residents, almost 20,000 in number, live in Lake County, while a small portion reside in Cook County. The Village was named in part for the number of deer in the area, and also in part named after Deerfield, Massachusetts. Deerfield History
The area now known as Deerfield was initially populated by Potawatomi Native Americans. Settled in 1835, it was called Cadwell's Corner named after it's founder Jacob Cadwell. Access to the Des Plaines River and Chicago River helped the area grow and in 1840 the name for the area was changed to Leclair. Just ten years later the name was changed one final time to Deerfield by one of the settlers, John Millen, in honor of his Massachusetts hometown of the same name. The Village of Deerfield was officially incoporated in 1903.
